Two Facts that Change Everything, and a Vandalism Story

Jesus is God ()

Jesus is God. Think about that for a second.

Jesus isn’t just a prophet, or a good teacher, or an inspirational leader who lived 2,000 years ago ... He is God. God came in person to earth to restore the relationship He lost with us. He allowed Himself to be ridiculed, beaten, and executed, as a replacement for what should happen to us. He died so we don’t have to die.

Who does that? Seriously.

God withheld nothing. God sought us when we didn’t even want Him to ... and He came to earth to restore to Himself a relationship with us.

So it only makes sense. If Jesus is God (i.e. if this is true) and God came to earth to restore a lost relationship with us (i.e. the loss of which has caused all the sorrow and sadness in the world), then how could we seriously be about anything else? What could possibly be more worth our time, effort, talent, and passion?

People Are Really Lost ()

It's true there are people who are really hungry, people who really need shelter, who really need jobs, who need safety, etc. Concrete needs like these are compelling, especially to those who aren't hungry, don't need shelter, who have jobs and are safe. But there is a need everyone bears whether hungry or full, covered or exposed, employed or jobless, threatened or safe. It is that we are all children who have run away from our Father, rejected Him, and we have lost ourselves.

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6.

WorldVenture establishes hospitals, creates jobs in poor communities, brings relief to disasters, and fights for the rights of the vulnerable, but all this is done to point people to a greater wealth, a greater feast, and a greater harbor of safety in Jesus.

A Vandalism Story

The image of vandalism above was taken from the wall in a public restroom.

It had three contributors.

The first person wrote "Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely," which is a quote from Lord Acton, a British Historian, in 1887, and ... as far as restroom graffiti goes ... a profound choice.

The second contributor, being humorous, scratched off "Power" and replaced it with "Vodka," to read "Absolute Vodka Corrupts Absolutely." Now according to the gospel and our understanding of sin, it is more likely that vodka releases the corruption already within, rather than actually creates corruption on its own. But that's a side point.

The third contributor, the one with the real insight worth paying attention to, scratched off "Vodka" and added "Faith." This new phrase "Absolutely Faith Corrupts Absolutely" is bigger than a snide crack at religion. It is a finger on the pulse of a growing public fear towards religion. This is a bummer.

The worst part of this kind of fear is that it lumps everyone together. The fact is: that is just not true.

At WorldVenture we do believe the good news of Jesus is worthy of traveling any distance, leaving behind everything, and actively persuading every open mind to believe in it. In this way our faith is absolute. It's a message that is right and needed for everyone. Salvation is by Jesus alone, and we must tell the world. But at the same time Jesus commanded us to walk in love and humility like He did. These two things are no tension for us at all, and something we seek to practice in every location we work.
