| Church Planter | 3 Years | Lifetime | South America | Uruguay | Uruguay has recently seen new openness to the Gospel and growth. It is a strategic time to plant churches and train leaders to guide the growing church. | The worker would serve on a team with Uruguayan pastors and believers to first, establish relationships, then share the Gospel in creative ways, and finally establish local churches. Planning would be done in consultation with others on the team. As the worker gains experience, he would begin to teach and train Uruguayan workers. Teaching opportunities would be available through Bible institute classes and less formal church settings. | The worker would need training in Bible as well as experience in church ministry. An understanding of modern secular philosophical thought would also be helpful. He/she would need a learner’s heart, to learn from other Uruguayans and fellow workers. He should be willing to wait the necessary time to win the respect of the Uruguayans. The worker should be someone who is able to work with other leaders from different backgrounds to develop the best strategy for starting churches in Uruguay. Spanish speaking. | 1613 |
| Seminary Teacher | 2 Years | Lifetime | South America | Uruguay | Train leaders for the growing church of Uruguay in both formal and non-formal settings. WorldVenture is presently working with two seminaries (Bible colleges) to help prepare these leaders. | The worker would teach a variety of subjects according to the needs of each school. Both schools are trying to emphasize a more practical application to learning rather than purely theoretical. There would be opportunities outside the classroom to work with students in evangelism and other church based ministries. Personal involvement in the lives and ministry of students is much appreciated and greatly needed. Mentoring type ministries have great potential. | This worker should have training in Bible and theology, educational methodology, and experience in church ministry. He/she will first need to be a learner in order to teach well: learning from the culture, learning from the other professors, and learning from experienced pastors. He must be willing to take the time to gain the credibility and the experience in order to have the respect of the Uruguayans. Spanish speaking. | 1614 |
| Children-at-Risk Worker | 2 years | Lifetime | South America | Uruguay | Ministry to children and their families, who because of growing poverty and a deteriorating family structure, are in danger of slipping into lifestyles of drug addiction and crime. | Initially, help with established ministries who are working with these children, helping meet their physical, educational, social, and above all, spiritual needs. The worker should be flexible to fit in wherever needed; possible activities might include tutoring in after-school classes, offering special recreation opportunities, evangelistic story telling, mime, and puppet ministry. The need is great and there is room for much creativity. Work with families to help develop a safe home environment. | Obviously, a love for children and a heart for this special kind of ministry are fundamental. Other character traits which are important: great patience; perseverance in spite of failures; attitude of a learner, to learn from other workers and to learn from the children; great flexibility. It would be helpful to have experience in a similar ministry in the US. Should be able to work with those from different backgrounds. Spanish speaking. | 1615 |
| University Student Worker | 1 Year | Lifetime | South America | Uruguay | Evangelistic outreach to the many university students in Montevideo, where there is very little Christian witness. | Serving with other student organizations to help form evangelistic Bible study groups, providing support for student leaders of these groups, and discipleship of new believers. Helping these students develop a Christian world view, in an environment where the teaching they receive is almost completely agnostic, existential, and Marxist. Helping connect Christian students with local churches and instilling a vision for world missions. | Should have a university degree; some training in leading small group evangelistic studies; seminary and student ministry experience would be helpful. Should be a good listener and someone who can take genuine interest in the areas of interest of the university students. Spanish speaking. | 1616 |
