| The Land and the People of Southern Africa |
Southern Africa is diverse in land, climate, people groups, economic status and languages. As a region of the world’s second largest continent, it encompasses 15 countries extending from the Congo border in the north to the Indian Ocean at the southern-most point.
The people are distinguishable in terms of linguistic and cultural groups. Some Southern African countries thrive while others are continually hit by the realities of high unemployment, AIDS, poverty and famine. The coasts of Southern Africa are home to most of the continent’s fishing waters; and manufacturing is concentrated inland. The countries in the southern region, as in the north, continue to emerge from colonialism. Many countries struggle politically and economically because of the ongoing changes.
Many Southern Africans claim Christianity in various forms. Workers in the area have a unique opportunity to train people in theology and leadership skills as they seek to share the hope of Jesus. At the same time, with nearly 25 percent of the population infected with AIDS, opportunities for medical ministries abound. Relief efforts will also help poverty-stricken populations in the future.
