| The Land and the People of Macau |
|
The country of Macau consists of one tiny peninsula and two small islands off the southern coast of China. Located 40 miles west of Hong Kong, the land area of Macau spans only 8.5 square miles. Macau is the oldest European settlement in the Far East. Fulfilling a 1987 agreement between Portugal and China, control of Macau reverted to the People’s Republic of China in 1999, ending 450 years of Portuguese rule. Huge gambling houses and the tourism they encourage account for 45 percent of the country’s income. Macau’s textile, electronic, and toy factories employ thousands from Mainland China. Macau has become one of the most congested communities in Southeast Asia. Macau’s population consists of six main people groups: Chinese residents of Cantonese descent who were born in Macau; a small number of Portuguese citizens; Macanese-those of mixed Portuguese/Chinese ancestry; immigrants from China; contract laborers from China with permits to reside in Macau for two to five years; and immigrants from other areas of Southeast Asia.

| WorldVenture's Work in Macau |
|
In 1986, two WorldVenture families moved to Macau from Hong Kong, forming the basis for the Great Wall Ministries Team (GWM). GWM is a genuine team ministry in which all the workers share ministry responsibilities while utilizing and developing each individual’s strengths and personality. The team’s primary focus on church planting sets the stage for an aggressive program of evangelism (e.g., open-air street meetings, English classes), and in-depth training of national leaders for the Chinese church. | Goals and Future Direction of the Work |
| The vision of GWM and WorldVenture in Macau is to help Chinese Christians establish a network of healthy, reproducing churches in order to reach all Chinese with the Good News of Christ’s kingdom. Team members and national Christians feel the urgency to strategically disciple new believers and train leaders while the country is still open to the gospel. |
