| The Land and the People of Central Asia |
|
Central Asia is a diverse region rising from the Caspian Sea to the majestic summits of the Tien Shan and Hindu Kush. From deserts to vast steppes, it is an open, sometimes harsh, but always beautiful land. The republics that make up Central Asia are part of the former. Highways, railroads and collective farms occupy the ancient trading routes of the Silk Road. Over half the cotton produced by the USSR was grown in this area. There are also significant natural resources, including large oil, gas and mineral reserves. Central Asian peoples can be divided into two groups. “Russified” people live mainly in urban areas and have adopted the Russian language and customs. The second group is a more traditional people who live in rural areas and villages and have maintained more of the indigenous languages, customs, and lifestyle of Central Asia.
