| The Land and the People of Central African Republic |
|
A land-locked nation in the geographical center of Africa, the Central African Republic is a vast, rolling plateau marked by deep river valleys. The landscape varies between tropical rainforest in the southwest and arid semi-desert in the extreme northeast. Diamonds and gemstones are the major product for export, along with agricultural products such as bananas and coffee. The Central African Republic has typically been one of the least developed countries in Africa. Most of the people live a rural, agricultural lifestyle. Literacy in the county is increasing, and about 60 percent of children receive an elementary-level education. The Central African Republic has been well evangelized, but the influence of Islam is increasing due to influx of Muslim immigrants.
