| The Land and the People of Canada |
Canada, located in the northernmost part of North America, borders the United States and has developed parallel with the United States both economically and technologically. The country became a self-governing dominion in 1867, while keeping its ties to Britian. Canada’s main political challenge has been its relationship with the province of Quebec, a region with a unique culture and French-speaking population.
Amid growing social and political change and instability, Canadians are showing an increased receptivity to the gospel. A growing prayer movement in Quebec is bringing together believers from many denominations. Canada also has a number of Bible institutes, colleges and theological seminaries committed to a biblical view of Scripture. Even so, Canadian churches have great needs — many have moved away from their biblical roots, lack evangelistic vision, and have tended to compromise on ethical issues. All of this has contributed to a decline in church membership. Even though the Christian church has become marginalized in many areas, the schools are playing a major role in strengthening evangelical witness.
