With its 260 languages and 200 or more ethnic groups, Cameroon is Africa’s most complex country. Cameroon is located on the west central Atlantic coast of Africa and features a varied landscape, including mountains, savanna, and tropical lowlands. The northern grasslands are hot and dry most of the year, while the central plateau region is cooler and the coastal areas are warm and humid. Agriculture is a prominent contributor to the economy of Cameroon and a large number of the people are farmers or herders, but this rural lifestyle is on the decline. Although petroleum has been one of the country’s most important natural resources, reserves are being depleted. The availability of manufacturing and service industry jobs is increasing, and Cameroon’s largest cities grow each year as large numbers of rural people move to urban areas seeking jobs. These cities have a dual nature: elegant hotels and fine office buildings coexist beside slums and shacks. Cameroon has one of the highest literacy rates in Africa. However, growth of the education system is hampered by increasing defense and internal security expenditures, and by widespread corruption. Because of the multitude of languages spoken by the Cameroonian people, Bible translation is an overwhelming task. Political uncertainty and threat of civil war continue to make life in Cameroon difficult.
