| The Land and the People of Bolivia |
|
Bolivia is a country of cultural wealth and beautiful Andean landscapes featuring remnants of mysterious ancient civilizations that make it an exciting destination for travelers. As a landlocked nation it is the highest and most isolated in Latin American. It is also the most indigenous, with more than 50 percent of the population maintaining traditional values and beliefs. Bolivia is among the poorest and least developed countries in Latin America. In the 1990s the economy moved toward becoming market-oriented. The country continues to struggle with deep-seated poverty, social unrest and has a high rate of illegal drug production. Bolivia gained independence from Spanish rule in 1825 and its history has consisted of nearly 200 rebellions and counter-coups.
