The country of Angola is located on the southwest coast of Africa. Rolling grasslands make up most of the landscape, but a rocky desert covers the southern part of Angola while tropical forests are found to the north. The Angolan economy is primarily based on agriculture, but natural resources, such as diamonds, petroleum and timber, are also sources of export income. A former Portuguese colony, Angola has a long history of political conflict. An ongoing civil war between nationalist and Communist factions plagues the nation and has delayed economic development. Ongoing indoctrination in schools with Marxist/Leninist teachings has left Angolans spiritually bound and in desperate need of the good news of Christ. Most Angolans are indigenous Africans belonging to several ethnic groups. Before Angola gained its independence from Portugal in 1975, nearly half a million Europeans and others of mixed African/European ancestry lived in Angola. Most of these people fled the country when civil war started. Those who remain own small businesses or are employed at jobs requiring technical or managerial skills. Angolans who live in rural areas work as farmers and herders, raising barely enough food to survive. The majority of adults in Angola cannot read or write.
