The mother of the young man who stole my car a year ago stood at my door. "Enter in peace." "Up to now, I've been too ashamed to come see you." She got on her knees in front of me. "Please tell the judge to forgive my son."
|
I got down and knelt beside her. "We've all offended God and we all need the Savior. That's what I told your son at the police station."
"You saw him?"
"Yes. I told him I forgave him. I wrote it in my declaration to the police."
She was astounded to learn it cost me $6,000 to replace the parts her son had stripped off and sold. "When there's forgiveness, someone still has to pay, so I had to bear it. That's what Christ did for me. I had a debt because of my sin; he took the punishment for me."
She then asked if she could bring her son's wife to visit. I said I wanted to meet her. They came the next day and I repeated what I told her mother-in-law. The man's daughter wouldn't let go of my hand when it was time to leave.
My heart broke for them. The prosecuting judge is suggesting 10 years in jail because he has been in prison before and used the car with accomplices for armed robbery. The court will probably come down hard on him, even though I did not press charges. He has been in prison since the robbery a year ago. |
