The Land and the People of Taiwan
Read about transformed lives in Taiwan »
The small, mountainous island of Taiwan lies approximately 90 miles off the coast of China in the South China Sea. More than 22 million people live on the island, which is slightly smaller than the states of Maryland and Delaware combined. Thickly forested mountains span the length of the island from north to south, with the tallest peak rising to over 13,000 feet above sea level. The climate of the island is subtropical, characterized by high temperatures, high humidity, and periods of heavy rainfall. Only a quarter of Taiwan is accessible for agriculture; farmers have terraced hillsides in order to maximize the amount of land available for growing crops such as rice.

The hardworking people of Taiwan, the world’s second most densely populated country, are its most important resource. Half the population is concentrated along the western coastal plain, which represents about a third of the island. Most Taiwanese are of Chinese descent, their ancestors having emigrated from Mainland China. Nearly 1.5 million Chinese fled to Taiwan from the mainland after Communists assumed control in 1949.

A strong desire for higher learning produces a 97 percent literacy rate. Taiwan has long been an economic powerhouse, exporting computers, electronics, textiles, sports equipment and more. However, the recent Asian economic crisis may threaten the island’s economy. Mainland China continues to pressure the democratic government of Taiwan for reunification, considering the island to be a renegade province.

    WorldVenture's Work in Taiwan
Wealth and Western worldviews are having a negative impact on young Taiwanese. Their society grasps for new sources of stability as traditional family structure and social order lose their influence. A sense of self-sufficiency, materialism and traditional religion that mixes Buddhism, Taoism and ancestor worship grips the hearts of the people. These dismal circumstances provide great opportunities for WorldVenture’s Taiwan team. Church planting, evangelism, cell group outreach, education, leadership training and mentoring are just a few of the ways WorldVenture workers are ministering in Taiwan. Goals and Future Direction of the Work

The WorldVenture team in Taiwan is committed to cooperating with a national church association to evangelize and plant new churches among the 97 percent of Taiwanese who do not know Christ. Although recent efforts have focused on Taiwan’s large cities, there is a desire to take the gospel to smaller areas that WorldVenture has yet to enter. Programs for evangelism and outreach at the Morrison Academy, the CB Theological Seminary, the Bamboo Valley Bible Camp and the CB Literature Center are ongoing as well.
